On Friday 17 May
John Erban & Clarissa Sánchez
teach the Intermediate class titled:
“Playing with Ochos”
Performance at 10:45pm

We are delighted to welcome John & Clarissa back to Carablanca following their first visit last year.  Based in Venezuela, they teach and perform tango worldwide.  In 2011 they obtained second place in the World Tango Championship in Tango Salon and also the award of Best Foreign Couple.

The full title of their class is: "Playing with Ochos. Understanding the leading/reception, density, dynamics and fluidity of the movements."

For an example of their accomplished and precise salon style, see this video of them dancing to di Sarli:
Junto a tu Corazón.

The DJ is Njål Bendixen

The photo shows DJs at a festival in Hamburg.  Njål is the man with the hat.  After living in Buenos Aires, Njål and his wife Cidinha moved to the UK and founded Luna y Molino tango.

Using a high level of improvisation, Njål chooses the music by assessing the mood of the milonga and reading the dance floor.  He structures the music to generate waves of energy with mainly smooth transitions and a climax at the end of the milonga.

Carablanca Tango Club

Open Fridays, Carablanca is London's longest-running tango club.  The friendly, informal atmosphere ensures that beginners and visitors mix easily with the regular dancers.

Our venue, Conway Hall, is a 1920s period building in Central London.  The main hall has a large wooden floor.  The bar is excellent value with a wide choice of drinks.

The dance evening is an Argentine milonga, preceded by a class.  Music is traditional Argentine tango, milonga and vals, played in tandas with cortinas by guest DJs.

Tango Classes

Classes are taught at three levels.

The Beginners tango course, which starts on the first Friday of the month, is for those with no knowledge of tango.

The Recent Beginners course assumes the knowledge of the Beginners tango course.

Intermediate classes assume the most knowledge.  In these classes you will find some who have danced tango for as little as three months and others who have danced for over ten years.

Empanadas for sale at the bar

Empanadas, sourced from Chango Empanadas, go into the oven on the hour.  Order one saying when you want it and whether you want a beef empanada, a chicken empanada or a vegetarian empanada filled with mozzarella, tomato and basil.  Give your table number if you have one.  Your empanada will be delivered to your table about fifteen minutes after the hour you choose.  If you don't have a table it will be delivered to the bar for you to collect.

Tango and Cocktails

A selection of 10 cocktails is available every week.  See our Cocktail Menu.

Tango and cocktails both originally became fashionable in Europe in the early twentieth century and they are particularly suited to each other. The subtlety and intensity of a well-prepared cocktail makes it the ideal accompaniment to the mood of tango. Our 1920s period venue, Conway Hall, provides exactly the right setting for recreating some of the elegance of an earlier cocktail age.
