The current
beginners tango course
started on 5 October

Carablanca Tango Club

Open Fridays, Carablanca is London's longest-running tango club.  The friendly, informal atmosphere ensures that beginners and visitors mix easily with the regular dancers.

Our venue, Conway Hall, is a 1920s period building in Central London.  The main hall has a large wooden floor.  The bar is excellent value with a wide choice of drinks.

The dance evening is an Argentine milonga.  Music is traditional Argentine tango, milonga and vals, played in tandas with cortinas by guest DJs.

Tango Classes

Classes take place in a separate room from the milonga. They are taught at two levels.

The Beginners tango course, which starts on the first Friday of the month, is for those with no knowledge of tango.

The Recent Beginners course assumes the knowledge of the Beginners tango course.

Friday 26 October
DJ fom Munich: Theresa Faus
Dancing from 8pm to midnight

Photo of Theresa

Theresa Faus has been a tango DJ for 14 years.  Based in Munich, she has DJed at milongas and special events throughout Europe and in Buenos Aires.  We are delighted to welcome her to DJ for the first time at Carablanca.

I recommend you read Theresa's DJ statement which I include in full.

"When I play music I draw on the richness of the traditional tango music: on the richness in styles, with rhythmic, romantic, complex, dramatic tangos; and on the richness of rhythms, melodic lines, phrasing, timbres, and colours within each tango.  I play for the dancers from a broad spectrum of music, with contrasts from tanda to tanda, in order to keep their inspiration alive during hours, always observing the mood and the energy on the floor.  My stylistic focus is on subtle, sophisticated, sometimes cheeky music as opposed to bombastic, big drama stuff; mainly from 1930 to 1945, and also from the 20s, and in smaller doses dramatic and super sweet music from later years.  Of the big orchestras I love especially Aníbal Troilo, there will be no milonga without his music.

This is my motto: Music that is upbeat but not hectic, calm but not monotonous, romantic but not overblown - music that gets directly into the feet!"

Theresa's visit to Carablanca was arranged in collaboration with Magic Roundabout Milongas.

Empanadas
Empanadas, sourced from Chango Empanadas, go into the oven on the hour.  Order one saying when you want it and whether you want a beef empanada, a chicken empanada or a vegetarian empanada filled with mozzarella, tomato and basil.   Give your table number if you have one.  Your empanada will be delivered to your table about fifteen minutes after the hour you choose.  If you don't have a table it will be delivered to the bar for you to collect.
Tango and Cocktails
A selection of 10 cocktails is available every week.  See our Cocktail Menu. Tango and cocktails both originally became fashionable in Europe in the early twentieth century and they are particularly suited to each other. The subtlety and intensity of a well-prepared cocktail makes it the ideal accompaniment to the mood of tango. Our 1920s period venue, Conway Hall, provides exactly the right setting for recreating some of the elegance of an earlier cocktail age.
